Participants & facilitators immortalize workshop
Recently, the Society for Gynaecologists and Obstetricians Cameroon (SOGOC) hosted a one-day training workshop aimed at improving skills in Comprehensive Abortion Care for medical practitioners in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The event took place on February 14, 2025, at Noblesse Hall in Nkoleton Hotel, bringing together eighteen healthcare providers from various hospitals across the Center Region.
Chaired by SOGOC’s Assistant Treasurer, Dr. Fouelifack Ymele, the workshop featured facilitators Ngang Peter and Dr. Kamdem Christelle. The session commenced with an engaging exercise led by Mr. Ngang Peter, titled “Crossing the Line,” which addressed the prevalence of unsafe abortion. This activity revealed that all participants had direct or indirect connections to the issue, underscoring its relevance and urgency in their personal and professional lives. Mr. Ngang emphasized the importance of evaluating personal beliefs, particularly when they may negatively impact others.

Participants then explored various values related to abortion, assessing whether these values could interfere with their professional responsibilities as healthcare providers. They were encouraged to practice empathy and active listening when addressing the concerns of women and colleagues facing abortion-related situations.

Dr. Fouelifack provided a brief presentation on maternal mortality in Cameroon and highlighted the efforts of the ACAC project to tackle this critical issue. He noted that the project advocates for judicial and administrative reforms to simplify abortion laws in the country.
Sharing personal experiences, participants concluded that many women suffer and even die due to the lack of accessible abortion care, ignorance of the law, and fear of stigma.

The workshop concluded with the presentation and distribution of a referral pathway document. This comprehensive five-part guide outlines standardized protocols for medical care, treatment, and rehabilitation services for survivors of rape. Developed collaboratively with government ministries and organizations focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), the document aims to provide a multi-sectoral response to the challenges faced by stakeholders in supporting survivors and aligns with national strategies to prevent and eliminate all forms of sexual violence.
